Description: Exhibits Designer

The Exhibits Designer develops the design and floor plans to implement all of the Museum’s exhibits projects. This includes working with the exhibits team and other departments to create engaging, immersive exhibits that are accessible, fun, and interactive while focusing on the visitor experience. The Exhibits designer reports to the Director of Exhibits and is expected to work collaboratively with individuals throughout SDMoM.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Exhibits Designer performs the following:

·         Prepare design documentation, including floorplan and elevation drawings, furniture construction drawings, digital gallery models, and casework matrices.

·         Participate in meetings to present gallery drawings, mockups of artwork and display furniture, paint color options, or other design factors.

·         Support the exhibits team with design work that happens in the gallery during installation of artwork and other components.

·         Digitally create artwork and casework mockups, scale models, and prototypes for gallery design planning as needed.

·         Work with Exhibit Fabrication Manager to source ideal textiles, finish hardware, etc. for exhibits.

·         Other duties as assigned.

 

Experience, Education, or Skills Required:

·         Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, interior design, theater design, environmental design, architecture or equivalent work experience.

·         3–4 years of experience in 3D design in gallery, museum, theatrical, events setting or related environments, including but not limited to floor plan design, construction drawing production, and interactive design.

·         Proficient with computer-aided drafting software (AutoCAD preferred), and 3D modeling software (SketchUp or similar); Adobe Creative Suite (especially Photoshop and InDesign). Organized approach to file management.

·         Experience designing in unconventional and diverse environments (e.g., outdoor space, historic architecture).

·         Previous experience in exhibition design, set/theater design, interior architecture, or industrial/furniture design.

·         Ability to work with Exhibit Developer to align design with content of project.

·         Knowledge of architectural and industrial design practices, documentation and standards.

·         Understanding of fabrication techniques, materials, and finishes.

·         Good hands-on sketching, model-making, and light-duty prototyping skills.

·         Familiarity with museum best practices (conservation, art handling, climate conditioning, lighting), ADA and life-safety regulations.

·         Ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously, receive and process large quantities of complex data. An eye for precision and detail is essential.

·         Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a creative and collaborative environment. Receptive to the ideas of others, able to work cooperatively to prioritize tasks and accommodate many different concerns and opinions.

·         Highly-motivated self-starter with willingness to learn and adapt to fast pace environment.

·         Ability to work well under hard deadlines and high pressure situations.

·         Possess strong time management and interpersonal skills.

·         Good communication skills.

 

Preferred Skills:

·         Experience creating multimedia, digital, and/ or projection experiences.

 

ADA Notations:

·         Regular sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, balancing, crouching, stooping, and communication (talking/hearing).

·         Regular/consistent lifting/moving large/bulky items weighing up to 25 pounds.

·         Vision requirements include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

·         Noise conditions range from quiet to moderate noise.
