Wayfinding + Experiential Designer

Wayfinding + Experiential/Environmental Designer

Davis Partnership’s Wayfinding + Experiential Design (WE Design) Studio is looking for a designer who cares about people. What we do is like user-experience in 3D. You'll influence the spaces we all live in and experience and will help determine how someone moves about the world. So if you’re a designer who cares about people; if you’re detail-oriented; if you can visualize space and materials and flow and movement; if you love considerate, behind-the-scenes work; if you are often caught day-dreaming about cute puppies (we want to make sure you’re human, automation is not taking over this job yet), then you’re exactly who we’re looking for.  ‘We’ are a small-but-growing, collaborative team of designers (see: problem solvers), thinkers, and storytellers inside of a large, multi-disciplinary architecture firm. We focus on big, exciting things but never forget the small but important details that make the work we do within considered spaces complete. The people I mentioned before who we get to work with (see: collaborate with) are talented and accomplished architects, landscape architects, and interior and lighting designers and we get to build off each others ideas and expertise to make great work happen. (If you're just looking for a spotlight-type job, you may want to think twice as wayfinding is both process-intensive and multi-disciplinary, not just big sexy aesthetic design stuff. No offence to that stuff, it is pretty, but it’s not our focus.)

Things You'll Need

-Desire to learn, listen, and solve problems

-Attention to detail

-Typographic sensitivity

-Belief that the best work comes through collaboration

-A delightful combination of ego and humility, which displays itself as confidence and aflair for presenting work

-Ability to talk to co-workers about both work and about their weekend

-Laugh at my jokes (*optional, I'm not that funny so don't brown-nose!)

-Aversion to producing “normal” things (i.e. a track-record of not taking 'no' for an answer)

-Memorization of at least 12 keyboard shortcuts in Adobe Creative Suite (bonus points for three-key combos) (Oh, and I'm just assuming you're well-versed in the Adobe Creative Suite programs, and if you're not I'd love to learn why you know keyboard shortcuts for applications you don't even use!)

-Desire to communicate well

-Experience in wayfinding processes and procedures

What you’ll do

-Help define environments alongside architects, landscape architects, interior designers, and lighting designers

-Plan where functional signage goes (message schedules, and comprehensive sign plans)

-Design signage that is compassionate and inclusive (that means ADA and general diversity and accessibility considerations are a must)

-Develop ideas, suggest new things and modifications to existing ideas and concepts, ensure consistency with overall environmental, visual and aesthetic considerations of the space

-Environmental graphics system development including programming, signage schedule, sign text and contents, physical sign and fabrication design

Bonus Point Skills (if you have these skills you'll get 250 extra bonus points even before you interview! Note: bonus points have no monetary value.)

-Proficiency drawing in scale and familiarity with architectural construction documents, elevations, plans, and shop drawings

-Working and recent knowledge of signage, wayfinding, and environmental graphics industry best practices including programming strategies, ADA and local code compliance considerations, as well as fabrication materials and methods

Note: We're not looking for any design unicorns and are realistic in our search. We know what we're looking for and believe we have laid it out pretty clearly above. We do our best to get back to every applicant but sometimes we get busy and get more applications than we expected. I apologize in advance if we don't get back to you right away or at all (hopefully not the case).

(Oh! And thanks in advance for taking time to apply for this position. I know it takes time and effort to job hunt, and it can be a thankless task. Nothing I can do about that except urge you to consider if you're a good fit here and only apply if you truly believe you are).

(Oh, and if you're writing a cover letter, which had better be good if you're even going to bother, my name is Collin.)
